2008 CSR HIGHLIGHTS

ENVIRONMENT

BALIK BATERYA: More than Protects the Environment

The Balik Baterya Program is Ramcar, Inc.’s flagship CSR program which involves collection of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs) for proper recycling and production of new automotive and industrial batteries. Proceeds generated from the value of collected ULABs are channelled to various environmental, educational and health projects.

In 2008, more than 254 metric tons of ULABs were collected from Balik Baterya partners saving an estimated 361 cubic meters of landfill and preventing spread of toxic wastes that can be detrimental to our soil and water systems.

The Balik Baterya program is implemented in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and the Philippine Recyclers Incorporated (PRI), with the support of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Health (DOH).

CLEAN AND GREEN

PBI/ Motolite regularly conducts clean-up and tree-planting activities to promote environmental awareness and stewardship among its employees.

EDUCATION

MAKING RECYCLING AND EDUCATION
WORK FOR NATION-BUILDING

Motolite-PBSP Balik Baterya-LEAP project is Ramcar, Inc.’s commitment to a better environment and improved quality of education in the Philippines. The program was launched last year with the goal of improving basic education in the Philippines through Project Learning Enhancement Assistance
Package, or Project LEAP.

Project LEAP aims to help public schools achieve world standards in education as set in the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by providing textbooks and workbooks, training public school teachers, conducting reading camps and providing supplemental feeding for schoolchildren.

In 2008, LEAP projects were implemented from ULABs donated by nearly 30 companies to benefit 2,152 students and 40 teachers from 3 public schools. Moreover, 28 companies signed up as new partners in Balik Baterya raising the number of partners and donors to nearly 100 since 2006.

RAMCAR MOTOLITE CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE (RMCE) PROGRAM

Ramcar Motolite Center for Excellence (RMCE) is a skills development and training program for deserving youth from Sta. Maria, Bulacan, with the Ramcar Technology Incorporated (RTI) and the Technological University of the Philippines- Manila as partners. Mostly out-of-school youths, 43 have recently graduated and are now applying their skills and knowledge in mechanical engineering technology at RTI.

BRIGADA ESKWELA: COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERISM IN ACTION

PBI/ Ramcar employees joined school leaders and community members of adopted barangays in Sta. Maria Bulacan for volunteering efforts to repair old public schools.

TB-DOTS: Supporting Community-Based
Health Education Initiatives
Motolite gives back to communities from Quezon City and Sta. Maria, Bulacan by providing its members with free orientation and seminars from funds generated from Balik Baterya program to prevent and cope with tuberculosis.

In partnership with PBSP, PLDT, and DOH, 125 individual community members were trained as TB educators while providing seminar orientations to 1,650 households on basic facts about tuberculosis, case finding and case holding.
